This document has been superceded and extended by this one: http://www.mudlogsys.com/wiki/index.php/mloggers/info-for-all-mloggers/197-mlogger-296-wits-modes Please refer to that document for more information about the WITS modes.

MLOGGER SENDS:
This is the WITS packet that is transmitted via the MLogger Serial ports (front or back of the box):

&&
01391234.56
01405.43
!!

Which means there is a Lag depth of 1234.56 feet, and total gas of 5.43 percent or 5430 units, (0139 is lag depth, 0140 is total gas)

MLOGGER RECIEVES:
This is a typical WITS packet we would expect to see from an EDR.
We can decode all WITS Record 1 packets (General Time Based), some items from Record 2 (Depth based data) and some items from Record 8 (MWD data):

&&
1984PASON/EDR
0108136.19
0110136.19
01130.35
012350.00
012435.00
012515.00
01373228497.00
014232284.90
01431614255.00
01441129965.00
0145484277.00
!!

At a minimum we only need 4 items:  Depth Bit, Depth Hole, Pump Stroke Rate #1, Pump Stroke Rate #2, and Pump Stroke Rate #3 if available: (i.e. 0108, 0110, 0123,0124, 0125)

We have several modes of WITS that control when we send and receive packets via RS-232 serial port.

Interrogative (for Pason workstation)  // we sent first then the EDR sends back
Streaming (Can Rig and Totco)  // we stream data continuously to the EDR and expect the EDR to stream back –requires full duplex
Pason Server (for hooking directly to the Pason Server)  // requires a Pason com box and cable
Petron WITS (used with older Petron EDR and OFI’s  EDR)     // uses 2 serial ports, one for sending and one for recieving

We also have a IP based WITS that uses UDP/IP
UDP WITS (used for several off brand EDRs and to communicate with MainLog software)  We're still waiting on a writeup for UDP WITS
